Hillary and Hillary's Online Supporters' New Beginnings

Well today was a new beginning for Senator Clinton's campaign and I hope that it will be a new beginning for ALL of Hillary Clinton's online supporters as well.

First, it appears that Senator Clinton has begun a new campaign strategy with new remarks and a new emphasis on public service.
She started her "Every County Counts" today on the Hill-acopter. As both MSNBC and the NY Times notes, she even has some new lines in the speeches that she gives to crowds.

For instance, MSNBC noticed in her campaign speeches yesterday in New Hampshire that she talked about her lengthy public service record:

--
At town hall meetings in Plaistow and Nashua yesterday, Clinton placed a renewed focus on her experience. "I was a public servant before I was ever in public office," she said, before citing areas on her resume where she said she has "been a change maker" -- working with the Children's Defense Fund, as a member of the Legal Services Corporation, working for universal health care in 1993, advocating for women's rights abroad as first lady; and as a senator from New York." America is ready for a new beginning," she said. "And it really comes down to one question: Who is ready and able on Day One to make the changes America deserves to have? This is the work of my lifetime. I have been working on behalf of change ever since I can remember."
--
 http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2 007/12/16/520025.aspx

MSNBC also noted in another blog posts that HRC used the words "change" and the phrase "a new beginning" 23 times in her speech at Council Bluff earlier today.

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2 007/12/16/520138.aspx

The New York Times' Patrick Healey noticed that Hillary has new energy on the campaign trail today. He said that she looked refreshed and her campaign speech was crisper than even yesterday's speech. He also took note of a few new lines in her speech where she described political setbacks:

--
Describing her role in the failed health care reform effort in 1993-94, she underscored the bit of biography with a new take-away line: "I sometimes think you can learn more about a person when you can see what they do after they don't succeed."

Mrs. Clinton doesn't often talk directly about the times she hasn't succeeded; usually she just says she "bears the scars" from the health care experience.
--
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/ 12/16/clinton-hits-iowa-with-new-energy/

Nice bit of humility from HRC here. Good to see.

Beyond the new campaign lines and other campaign apparatus, it appears that Hillary will engage in a new media strategy as well. She's going to perform another Ginsburg and appear on all six morning shows tomorrow according to Time:

http://thepage.time.com/2007/12/16/roadb locker/

Finally, Hillary received two important endorsements today from both the Des Moines Register and Bob Kerrey.

So, Hillary's campaign will have a fresh start this week. Borrowing from Anne of Green Gables and putting my own spin on it, this week is a new week for Hillary supporters with no mistakes in it (yet). I think we online supporters should pitch in to this new phase of the campaign and here's my idea to do that.

It appears that Hillary's campaign wants to emphasize various parts of her biography that most people don't know that much about. For instance, this article about her work on the 1972 McGovern campaign in Texas describes a Hillary that most people probably don't know that much about:

Experience from 1972 stumping in Texas helped shape Clinton's campaign

--
"I had never spent time in Texas before, so everything from South Texas and crossing the border to eat goat to hanging out in the Hill Country" was new, Mrs. Clinton said.

The McGovern campaign operated out of a brick storefront on West Sixth Street in Austin. When the young staffers weren't at the headquarters, they were at Scholz Beer Garten, a favorite after-work spot for the city's political progressives, and the Armadillo World Headquarters, a music hall that famously catered to both rednecks and hippies.

"A lot of serious campaign decisions were made at Scholz's," Mrs. Clinton said. "And we occasionally got to blow off some steam and go to the Armadillo. I remember seeing Jerry Lee Lewis there, which was one of the highlights of my time in Austin."

Now what if we online supporters tried to help the effort by posting some POSIIIVE diaries about Hillary once a day that described something that most people here in the blogosphere don't know about her. Maybe we could devote our energies for the next couple of weeks to posting positive stuff about Hillary rather than the negative stuff about other candidates? IMHO, the most important thing that Hillary's campaign needs right now is positive news about her rather than negative stuff about her opponents.

I fear that posting negative information about her opponents here, on youtube and elsewhere will feed the media narrative that Hillary and her supporters are mean, the other candidates are nice etc. Based on a lot of polling, there are a LOT of undecideds out there in both Iowa and New Hampshire. Let's persuade them to come join our camp. But in order to do that, we need for the media narrative to change from mean, negative Hillary to positive, uplifting Hillary. I'm willing to do my part. I wonder if other Hillary supporters are willing to do their part? Can we online Hillary fans support the new beginning in Hillary's campaign on this site? I hope so!!

What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? What other ways can we promote Hillary in a positive way in the coming weeks?

I would normally agree with you (none / 0)

I'm a big believer in Machiavellian politics and I have said on this board that I'm a fan of negative politics as well as contrast politics. However, we have limited time; limited resources to get our messages out (just 2 diaries/day). At this point in time, the mainstream media is LOOKING for an excuse to call out Hillary and her supporters for negative campaigning after the Shaheen incident. It would support their narrative that Hillary is mean, cold, calculating etc. I don't want us--her online supporters--to contribute to that meme, especially with the likes of Ben Smith of the Politico looking for that type of thing. Hopefully we dodged a bullet with what some troll posted on youtube last night. But we're not going to get too many second chances.

Look, the media holds the Clintons and her supporters to a different standard than the others. We could complain about it all day, but it's reality. We cannot afford to screw it around for Hillary, especially during these times, when the media is looking for ANYTHING to knock her down. They will use anything and I mean anything including comments here to distract the campaign from her goal of projecting a positive message. I don't want to see that happen.

I would HATE to see anything that we did here or elsewhere in the blogosphere in the general that could derail her campaign further. That's why I think we should take the conservative (small "c") approach and just positive diaries from now and until Iowa. We can do regular postings after Iowa in another 3 weeks. But until then, let's stay POSITIVE.

Re: I would normally agree with you (none / 0)

I'm a moderate and was pretty open minded on Hillary earlier this year.

I have to tell you, I more or less fell on Obama's side because of people like AreYouReady and a few others.

I haven't completely closed my mind to Hillary at this point, so I hope you're sincere about this.

Hillary has a lot of potential, but it sometimes seems like her supporters are doing her more harm than good.

Well kostner/areyouready (none / 0)

hasn't been on this site for months and I have a funny feeling that he won't be anywhere on the internet in the next few weeks/months based upon what he said on another site. He's very nervous about this race. He's too emotionally wound up right now to go on the internet to post stuff so I don't think you'll have to worry about areyouready. Besides, he moved on from this site a few months ago. He's focused on local blogs in Iowa and Hillary friendly sites, not here.

So, take that for what you will....

bs (none / 0)

the savagery of the obama folks - here and everywhere on the web has made me say now

ANBODY BUT OBAMA -

There is not a diary or a thread where Obama supporters donrt come in and say that the clintons are corrupt liars or sexist crap like that hillar cackles - or whatever

twice this week - a poster named jello - said Clinton was a rapist by god -

I am going to push hard on Obamas negatives from now until feb 5 and I hope other clintoin supporters do too.

we are not the campaign, but we will do what we can to present the reality that Obama will doom us in november if he is chosen

Offend the Media - Vote for Hillary!

Thank you g (none / 0)

I appreciate you considering my point. I know it's really tough, given what other opponents are saying/doing right now. But I think that we really need to be disciplined and focused on our objective of getting Hillary nominated. If that means we bite our tongues and hold back on certain stuff for the next couple of weeks, then so be it. It'll be worth it in the end when this whole nomination process is over and HRC is our 2008 nominee. We can't lose sight of that in all of our bickering with others here at mydd/other places at the blogs....

Here's another positive article (2.00 / 1)

about Hillary's campaign appearances in Iowa today from the DesMoines Register:

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pb cs.dll/article?AID=20071216/NEWS/712160 04-1/SPORTS09

Clinton's 'Hill-A-Copter' makes its first landing

Dunlap, Ia. With just 18 days to go until the Iowa caucuses, Hillary Clintons campaign is stressing that every pocket of Iowa is crucial in helping secure her nomination.

Clinton wont go door-to-door in Iowa like she did in New Hampshire Saturday, at least not on this weeks Iowa blitz, her staff said today.

Instead, shes drawing attention by whirring in a chopper staff dubbed the Hill-A-Copter on a five-day handshake-a-thon, trying to make an impression on as many of Iowas 1,781 precincts as possible.

---

Interesting that the Boston Globe reporter is going with her in the Hill-acopter today given their endorsement of another candidate yesterday....

Lobbyists (i.e. DMR) will always endorse Hillary. No surprise there. (Obama and Edwards were dreaming)

Just saying that you "changed" doesn't make it true.

Re: I am focused (none / 0)

The job requires a president who not only understands the changes needed to move the country forward but also possesses the discipline and skill to navigate the reality of the resistant Washington power structure to get things done.

The DMR agrees: only Hillary Clinton is prepared to engage in vigorous battle with the special interests of Washington, DC.

are you a Hillary supporter? (none / 0)

I don't believe you are. If you haven't figured it out already b/c you skimmed the diary or quite frankly didn't bother to read it, this diary wasn't addressed to you. I don't care what you and your friends do. I do care about how Hillary supporters come across on the web and therefore, this diary was addressed mainly to them.

Thanks....

Re: Hillary (none / 0)

I'm not sure blogs influence the vote- if they did, John Edwards would be winning by a mile.

What I believe is more important is answering the news stories- most internet news stories have a comments section after- that is what should be concentrated on- she is getting killed there, for one, because the Drudge Report links to many of them and his repug readers flood the comments sections and contrary to what some have swallowed- Hillary getting the nomination is the LAST thing they want to happen.  In my opinion, that should be the focus.

by reasonwarrior on Sun Dec 16, 2007 at 07:24:00 PM EST

I don't believe that the blogs influence the vote (none / 0)

either, but I do think that an over the top diary/post here or elsewhere in the blogosphere could influence a media cycle negatively. Hillary doesn't have time for a negative media cyle right now.

That's why I think we should concentrate on positive news items rather than going negative on any of HRC's opponents. I fear Ben Smith who does scope places like this for news. His stuff gets picked up by the mainstream media. Again, they are looking for ANYTHING that will support the negative media narrative about Hillary.

Love those pics in your signature by the way....

Another article (2.00 / 1)

here's the recount of HRC's campaign appearance at Dunlap:

Clinton invites voters to 'inspect' her

DUNLAP, Iowa - Standing atop a stage in a livestock auction barn, Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton likened the experience to her quest to woo undecided voters in the closing days before Iowa's pivotal caucuses.

"I've been to cattle barns before and sales before, in Arkansas, but I've never felt like I was the one that was being bid on," Clinton told a crowd in western Iowa. "I know you're going to inspect me. You can look inside my mouth if you want. I hope by the end of my time with you I can make the case for my candidacy and to ask you to consider caucusing for me."

but on Mydd this comes way too late. And the most recent attacks, particularly on Obama, have seemed to pretty much set in stone the larger dynamic.

Re: Hillary and Hillary's New Beginnings (none / 0)

Yeah, "bears the scars" was an awful line.

Made her sound like a victim and also was a vague reminder of her husband's escapades.

Glad she's not using it any more.

(BTW: If any Hillary people are reading this. Tell her to stop shaking her head "no" when she talks all the time. The body language is all wrong. It's like "don't believe me, don't believe me, don't believe me.....")

by Bush Bites on Sun Dec 16, 2007 at 10:59:56 PM EST

Re: Hillary and Hillary's New Beginnings (none / 0)

She also shakes her head "yes" a bit too much when somebody's saying something she agrees with.

One or two slow shakes of agreement should be fine, I would think.

(Sometimes she looks like a bobble head.)

Well, I remember in my sociology (none / 0)

and anthropology class I learned that women tend to nod their head in order to show that they're listening to a person, not to show that they agree or disagree with that person. I didn't realize it, but sometimes I do that.

I don't think her nodding her head is going to change. Nodding her head was a learned behavior that most likely she learned as a young lady. Some things like that just aren't going to change. Take it or leave it....

Re: Hillary and Hillary's Online Supporters' (none / 0)

This is a great idea, and I promise to contribute to it.  It's been ages since I blogged here but I do believe that we, as Hillary's supporters, have an obligation to help others become familiar with her record of experience and her many accomplishments.

As a native Arkansan, Hillary Clinton's candidacy means a great deal to me. There is no doubt in my mind that she is a dedicated public servant who has spent her life trying to make this world better and to help people.  Although she and Bill Clinton were arriving in the state about the time I left to get a graduate degree (Bill returned to Arkansas after law school at Yale), a relative quite close to me worked with Hillary on several statewide initiatives.

You may know that one thing Hillary did as a young adult was to work with the Children's Defense Fund.  There was no comparable organization in the state of Arkansas in the mid-1970's. And in a state with a high rate of impoverished people, issues involving children and families were especially paramount. Not long after she moved to Arkansas she became a founding member of the Arkansas Advocates of Children and Families. I remember that she continued to be heavily involved with this organization and even later served as the chair in 1979 which was the International Year of the Child - a time in which a lot of important initiatives were undertaken in the state. My relative is a strong supporter of Hillary for President and it all began with their meeting in the state about thirty years ago around issues they both cared deeply about.

I think it's especially important to talk about this level of involvement because the founding of this organization took place early in her career and in Bill's career.  It really helps to know the kinds of things that individuals work on early in their lives because it often reflects what is fundamentally important to them.  In the years since her move to Arkansas and the beginning of her life there, Hillary as built up incredible expertise in matters that have concerned her for many years.  One of the areas where she has expertise is in bringing about change that is sorely needed.

I hope that as we move further into the election cycle that people will come to know the Hillary that I know through my close kin.  The words they use to describe her are strong, dedicated, compassionate, leader, fun, hardworking, helpful and brilliant.  She will make a great President.

Re: Hillary and Hillary's Online Supporters' New B (none / 0)

I appreciate your intention but it is pretty obvious that the problem with Hillary's campaign is that it inevitably attracts, besides genuinely committed supporters, the mediocre, fearful and those with an unfulfilled sense of entitlement.  The problem is cultural and endemic.

Creative, open and self-actualised personalities generally will not assimilate into a rigidly established hierarchy such as she represents.  Hillary has many thoughtful supporters, but there are many acolytes who rarely contribute more than the endless repetition of their own questionable beliefs and righteous attempts to destroy, by fair means or foul, any perceived threats to this structure, and they are often the most energetic and outspoken.  They are by nature combative, unconvincing and didactic and their performance this past year on MyDD illustrates this with remarkable clarity.

Re: Hillary and Hillary's Online Supporters' New B (none / 0)

I wasn't referring to anyone in particular, but the consequences of AreYouReady's, and others, anger and bad manners, being at once insulting and unwilling to engage in honest dialogue, are still apparent.  Every sign of thoughtfulness or even-handed behaviour on the part of another poster was merely an opportunity to ridicule or demean.  It leaves lasting ill-will and does the candidate irreparable harm, at least here, in the long run.

I think there are more than a few regulars who gave up at that time in disgust, leaving MyDD the poorer whether you generally agreed with them or not.

Much of the behaviours, spamming thoughtless diaries, insulting disregard for others, bald-face promotion, pointless cheer-leading and misstatement of fact, have apparently been with us since.
